North Minneapolis on Sat., April 12 for Keynote Address, Service Project Opportunities for the Public to Participate Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his daughter Naomi Tutu will travel to North Minneapolis on Sat., April 12 as part of the youthrive PeaceJam Conference. Youth and adults from North Minneapolis, along with youth attending the youthrive PeaceJam Conference, will participate in a community-wide service project, part of an ongoing peace movement developed by youth in North Minneapolis. The service project is inspired by Archbishop Tutu’s message of “making friends of your enemies,” and is organized around the themes of feed the body, feed the mind, feed the spirit and feed the community. youthrive is the Upper Midwest affiliate of the international PeaceJam Foundation. Greater Twin Cities United Way has provided a one-year grant to youthrive to continue working with youth in North Minneapolis on their peace initiative. Where: Activities will take place primarily in and around North Community High School (1500 James Ave. N.), Broadway High School (1250 West Broadway), and Cub Foods Broadway, (at the corner of West Broadway and Lyndale Ave. North) in North Minneapolis. Saturday, April 12 Schedule Highlights: 1 p.m. Archbishop Tutu makes keynote address to youth attending PeaceJam in North High School Auditorium. The public is invited to hear his remarks simulcast on large screens outside North High School and in the North High cafeteria, and broadcast on Cable Channel 15. 2 p.m. Peace Parade, led by Archbishop Tutu. The parade will start from North High School’s Door 13, proceed north on James Avenue, go right onto Broadway Avenue, proceed down Broadway, turning right into the Cub Foods Broadway parking lot. 2 p.m. Free food, courtesy of Cub Foods Broadway and its vendors, will be available as part of the youth’s goal to feed the body and feed the community. 2:30 p.m. Archbishop Tutu departs for youthrive’s “Day of Peace” at the Minnesota Department of Corrections–Red Wing. Naomi Tutu stays in North Minneapolis. 1 – 4 p.m. Service Project Expo in North High School gymnasium, plus service projects at Broadway School, Shiloh Church, and Cub Foods. See service project descriptions. Assembling food for local community, plus entertainment and activities at Cub Foods Broadway parking lot. Visuals in Peace (VIPs) displayed as symbol of peace in the community. Youth will be asking youth and adults to make a commitment to peace by signing the peace covenants. 4 p.m. Naomi Tutu and Youth Planning Team to make remarks at Cub Foods Broadway stage to wrap up the service project.
